Second home in Izu
Like many of the Japanese and international elite living in Tokyo, Jacoulet’s family spent the summer Mitohama near Numazu in Shizuoka Prefecture. The establishment of the Numazu Imperial Villa nearby in 1893 by Emperor Meiji played a significant role in attracting high-ranking officials and notable figures to the area. The Izu connection is important because it is here that his interest in gidayu, a shamisen-based genre of Japanese classical music was first nurtured.
