Throughout his lifetime, Paul Jacoulet held numerous exhibitions in Japan, especially during the 1930s and 1940s. Many of these were sponsored by high-end department stores such as Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya, which traditionally served as important cultural institutions by hosting prominent art exhibitions. These shows helped to establish Jacoulet’s reputation within Japanese artistic and collector circles.
After his death in 1960, interest in his work waned domestically, particularly during the 1960s and 70s. However, the early 2000s marked a significant revival of attention. A major example is the 2003 exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art, which introduced his work to a new generation of Japanese viewers in a museum setting.
In recent years, Jacoulet has also been featured in exhibitions in Karuizawa, a location closely associated with his life and artistic practice. These shows aim to celebrate and deepen the regional connection to the artist, reinforcing his legacy within Japan.
Note the lists are under development. Any information about exhibitions, including photos of flyers, newspaper notices, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
