Embassy Years

After his father’s death from injuries sustained in WWI, Jacoulet took a sectretarial post at the French Embassy in Tokyo. It was the Taisho era, sometimes referred to as Japan’s ‘jazz age’, with changing social mores and a growing cosmopolitan air among young Japanese in Tokyo.
